Millions of people now ask ChatGPT what to buy, which tool to use, or which service to hire. In 2026, OpenAI started putting ads inside those conversations.
This is a new channel, and it is moving fast. Here is what business owners need to know, in plain English. (Updated October 2026.)
How ChatGPT ads work
- Where they appear: ads show below ChatGPT’s answer, clearly labelled Sponsored. They are separate from the answer itself.
- Who sees them: users on the Free and lower-cost Go plans. OpenAI has said paid plans like Plus and Pro stay ad-free.
- When they show: when the conversation is relevant to what you sell. Someone asking about running shoes may see a shoe brand, for example.
- What OpenAI promises: ads do not change ChatGPT’s answers, advertisers do not get users’ chats, no ads are shown to users under 18, and ads stay away from sensitive topics like health and politics.
A quick timeline
- January 2026: OpenAI announced it would test ads.
- February 2026: ads went live in the US for Free and Go users.
- May 2026: the self-serve Ads Manager opened to US businesses.
- Late August to September 2026: self-serve access expanded to Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and India, according to OpenAI’s announcements and industry reports.
Things are changing month by month, so always check the latest options inside Ads Manager before you plan a budget.
How you pay
At launch, ads were sold on a cost-per-impression basis with large minimum commitments. Since then, OpenAI has added cost-per-click and results-based bidding, and minimums have dropped sharply. Industry reports mention a minimum daily budget in India of roughly ₹725, which is small enough for a real test. Treat any number you read online (including this one) as a guide, and confirm it in your own account.
Is it worth testing?
For many businesses, yes, but carefully. Here is how I think about it:
- Good fit: products and services people research before buying, like software, courses, travel, home services, electronics and B2B services.
- Weaker fit: very local, impulse or low-price products where search and social already work well.
- The real advantage: people in ChatGPT are often mid-decision. They are comparing options, not just scrolling.
Start with a small test budget, one clear offer and one strong landing page. Judge it on leads and sales, not clicks.
How to get your business ready
1. Fix your landing page first
A visitor from ChatGPT already has context. Your page must answer their question fast: what you offer, who it is for, the price or next step, and proof that you are real.
2. Set up conversion tracking
Do not run a new channel blind. Set up the conversion tracking that Ads Manager supports, and keep your GA4 and CRM tracking clean, so you can compare ChatGPT honestly with Google and Meta.
3. Prepare a clean product or service feed
If you sell products, a tidy feed with clear titles, prices and images helps your ads show up for the right questions.
4. Earn free visibility too
Ads are one half. The other half is being mentioned in ChatGPT’s normal answers. Clear, helpful content, real reviews, a consistent business profile across the web and well-structured pages all make it easier for AI tools to understand and recommend you. This is often called AEO or GEO (answer and generative engine optimisation).
The bottom line
ChatGPT ads are early, and early channels often reward the businesses that test first, while costs are still settling. Start small, track everything, and keep what works.
